On September 11, 2001, 19 men hijack four fuel-loaded commercial airlines bound for west coast destinations. This terrorist attack on the United States is orchestrated by al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.A total of 2,977 people are killed in New York City, Washington, DC and outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, in the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history.
The Victims:
At the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan, 2,753 people are killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 are intentionally crashed in the north and south towers.
Of those who perish during the initial attacks and the subsequent collapses of the towers, 343 are New York City firefighters, another 23 are New York City police officers and 37 others are officers at the Port Authority.
The victims range in age from two to 85 years. Approximately 75-80 percent of the victims were men.
At the Pentagon in Washington, 184 people are killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashes into the building.
Near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, 40 passengers and crew members aboard United Airlines Flight 93 die when the plane crashes into a field. It is believed that the hijackers crashed the plane in that location, rather than their unknown target, after the passengers and crew attempted to retake control of the flight deck.

Families of those killed had until December 22, 2003 to apply for compensation. Families who agreed to get compensation from the federal fund agreed not to sue the airlines.
February 22, 2005 - Saying it has exhausted all DNA technology, the New York City Medical Examiner Office halts the process of identifying human remains from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center site. Of the 2,749 people known to have been killed at the World Trade Center site, only 1,585, or 58 percent, are identified by recovered physical remains.
April 2, 2007 - The remains of two more victims of 9/11 at the World Trade Center are positively identified. Of the 2,749 known deaths in the attacks in New York, 1,146 victims have yet to be linked to remains.
May 24, 2007 - The Chief Medical Examiner of New York City, Dr. Charles S. Hirsch, rules that the death of Felicia Dunn-Jones in 2002, from dust exposure, is directly linked to the 9/11 attack and therefore a homicide. This raises the 9/11 death toll to 2,750.
July 19, 2007 - The New York Medical Examiner’s office announces that the remains of three more people are positively identified. 1,133 victims, 41 percent of the total, remain unidentified.

Update: Willow Long - 22 year-Old Uncle "Justin DeRyke" charged with three counts of murder
EFFINGHAM, Ill. - Justin DeRyke, the uncle of Willow Long, a 7-year-old Illinois girl who was found dead Monday night, was charged Wednesday with (3) three counts of first-degree murder in her death and was ordered held on $5 million bond, CBS St. Louis reports.
A criminal complaint alleges the 22-year-old DeRyke stabbed his niece in the chest with a knife on the family's property Saturday night.

DeRyke told investigators he was home alone with Willow and her three-year-old brother Saturday night when Willow accidentally scratched him, according to court documents obtained by the station. This reportedly angered him and caused him to yell at Willow which in turn led her to run out of the house and towards a brush pile in the family's backyard.
DeRyke said he chased after her, but she tripped and fell into the brush pile causing a stick to impale her neck, the station reports, according to the documents.

DeRyke reportedly told police Willow began to twitch and he believed he had to end her suffering, so he grabbed a knife out of his bedroom, slit her throat and then stabbed her in the heart approximately five times.
According to court documents, DeRyke then told police he put Willow's body into several plastic bags and secured the bags with duct tape. Afterwards, DeRyke said he disposed Willow's body in a rural area south of Watson, Illinois.
DeRyke's father Dale told KDSK that his son confessed to the killing during police questioning. He said, his son told him. "She ran, she tripped, a stick went right through her neck and into her head," he told the station. "He's thinking oh my God, I killed her or she just died they are going to blame me, he's not thinking correctly ... I believe he put her out of her misery, and that's all I can say for sure."
Volunteers discovered Willow's body around 7:30 p.m. Monday and DeRyke was arrested around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
An autopsy conducted Tuesday on the girl revealed that her throat had been slashed. Smaller stab wounds were also discovered near her collarbone and neck. Doctors also found defensive wounds onWillow's hands, according to the station.

Judge sets bond hearing for Andrea Sneiderman
The judge who sentenced Andrea Sneiderman to prison has ordered a bond hearing in her case.
DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Gregory Adams on Monday ordered a bond hearing for November 6, 2013.
The 37-year-old mother of 2 was convicted last week on 9 of 13 counts against her, including perjury and making false statements. Adams sentenced her to serve five years in jail with credit for about a year of house arrest.

An attorney for Sneiderman last week filed a motion seeking a new trial and asked for bond while the appeal is pending. Sneiderman's husband, Rusty Sneiderman, was gunned down in November 2010. Andrea Sneiderman's boss, Hemy Neuman was convicted in the killing but found to be mentally ill.
Prosecutors say Sneiderman lied to police and to a jury.
